Communikite - Communicative needs in first-aid kit for humanitarian emergency situations

is an Erasmus+ KA220-HED project (Cooperation partnerships in higher education, 2023-2026) with a consortium of European entities led by the University of Salamanca.

The project “Communikite” is co-funded by the Erasmus+ programme of the European Union. The content of this webpage is the sole responsibility of the Universidad de Salamanca and neither the European Commission nor the Spanish Service for the Internationalisation of Education (SEPIE) is responsible for any use that may be made of the information contained therein.

General objectives
1

To create and integrate into a common site a set of tools for basic communication for people in humanitarian emergencies, with a special focus on the current situation in Ukraine.

2

To meet the vital communicative needs of people who have no prior knowledge of the language (level 0 in English, Spanish, French, German, Italian, and Portuguese [and Polish where appropriate]) and the host society.

3

To produce results extensible to other circumstances where similar conditions of communicative urgency emerge. COMMUNIKITE is a communicative icebreaker for the first contact with a new language, which should be stimulating, positive and non-traumatic.

Target groups
1

Groups of refugees who stand at the A0 level and must overcome the barriers of the most basic communication exchanges, without which a successful integration process cannot even begin to develop. They will benefit from the first outcomes of the project, which revolve around the creation of materials such as a pictographic glossary to get around in their daily life, a vade mecum containing useful information about the functioning of the country, as well as a glossary with pragmatic clues regarding the receiving culture.

2

Mediators: understood as the NGOs, individual volunteers, public agencies, and private organizations cooperating with refugees. Their on-field work will be supported by a guide explaining the exploitation of the materials produced by the project, as well as by some additional elements, such as activities to check the improvement of learners’ skills, and tools to deal with transliteration and illiteracy.

Outcomes
1

TRAINING ACTIVITIES

a. Teaching foreign languages to absolute beginners (level 0).
b. Cultural and linguistic mediation.

2

INTELLECTUAL OUTPUTS

a. A multilingual first-aid communicative kit for humanitarian emergency situations (KITE).
b. A mediation and application guide of KITE.
